Sentimental Sunday: Who Are My FAVER/FAVOR Ancestors & Relatives?

Tags: , , , , ,

In 1869 My 4th Grandfather Philip CARTER married Annie FAVER in Washington-Wilkes, GA.

When they married, Grandma Annie already had a 2 yr old Daughter named Anna WRIGHT and aside from my childhood memory of Grandma Annie’s long braid of hair, held in a glass jar by my Great Grandmother Annie CARTER JACKSON {obviously, her namesake}, that is all I know of Annie Faver.

Recently, much to my amazement, Willie BOLTON and his Daughter, LaKisha BOLTON-GREEN discovered Our Georgia Roots and tagged the blog! They are descendants {Grandson and Great Granddaughter} of Mamie FAVORS-BOLTON, a FAVORS Ancestor I posted about on July 23 – Mamie FAVORS Bolton 1891-1982!

This for me is an unexpected blessing and an opportunity to answer questions I NEVER thought I’d have an answer to and possibly the discovery of new “cousins” and a lost Grandmother’s history.

I have TONS of questions for Willie and Kisha… thank goodness they live close by which gives me an opportunity to meet them in person! But for the sake of posterity, I wanted to post my initial FAVER/FAVOR/FAVORS questions here at OGR too!:-)

  1. It appears that Henry BOLTON had 2 wives and a total of 28 children. Were Amanda/Mandy FAVER {1st wife} pictured with Henry and Mamie FAVORS {2nd wife} related?
  2. Do you know the names of Mamie’s (or Mandy’s) Parents and Grandparents? [Luckie: Mamie's Parents were Paris and Janie Faver/Favor. I believe Henry's Father was Silas Bolton. Mandy's Parents are still unknown]
  3. Do you know who would have been the original slaveowner of Mamie’s (or Mandy’s) family?
  4. Where did your FAVORS and BOLTONS originally live in Wilkes County? [Luckie: It appears the Boltons were originally from Oglethorpe Co. and the Favors (post-emancipation) in Pento and Derbyshire, Wilkes Co.]
  5. Has it ever been said that your FAVOR/FAVORS were of Native American decent?
  6. Are you aware of any CARTER and/or WRIGHT relatives from Washington-Wilkes?
  7. Have you ever heard of Philip CARTER and Annie FAVER?
  8. Who is your oldest living FAVOR/FAVORS relative? Could I speak to them?
  9. Is there a documented family tree that I could study?
  10. Are there pictures of your FAVOR/FAVORS Ancestors?

Just when think you’ve hit a brick wall, along comes new cousins to provide a much welcomed detour! Lord, I love it!:-)

Luckie.

  1. Luckie,

This is great news. I’m excited for you. BTW, I also have FAVORS in my family tree. My grandfather’s (John Robert Taliaferro) first wife was Lillie Bell FAVORS. His second wife, my grandmother Fannie Mae Lawrence, had a brother Noel Lawrence who married Lozie Anne FAVORS. Not sure what counties they are associated with-possibly Coweta, Greene, and Fulton. Also have a WRIGHT (cousins) with roots in Meriwether County.

  2. Renate – I think so too! I don’t believe in coincidences! I’ll make sure to take pics & have my fingers crossed on the family connection!

San – I have no doubt that after I’ve shaken my family tree roots loose, I will have unearthed a few of our shared Ancestors. Again, I don’t believe in coincidences and too many of our kin shared common last names and lived closed by each other.

I fully believe the Ancestors assist in putting this puzzle together — piece by piece!:-)

    Luckie.

  4. You are not going to find anymore Favor/Favors in Washington. The Favor (or Favors this is what they go by now) live in Athens, Georgia. We, the Boltons are the Favors now so you will not find that name in Wilkes or Lincoln County. We just had a family reunion in Atlanta this past summer, you missed it! Of the 28 children, 5 are still living. We do not have a true family griot so you will have to piece together stories. I know that you don’t like cemeteries but the cemetery on “Big Mama’s” obituary is the family cemetery.

Like I said, there are LOTS of us as you can imagine, 28 kids branching off having large families of their own. I can put you with the Favors if you like. I am probably the closest with them in the family because I was made to know them in elementary school by a boy who told me “I am your cousin and here is how…” The Favors left the area and I don’t know why, there has been research done on our family by the late Paris Favors that traces the family history.

  5. Thanks LaKisha! Your response brings up another new list of questions!:-) When you mentioned the late Paris FAVORS, I remembered that I’d done research to find that Mamie’s Parents were Paris & Janie (CLAIBORN) FAVORS. Obviously the deceased is a grandson & namesake of Mamie’s Father?

I found 2 Paris’ in Wilkes County:

    * Paris FAVER married Mary HARRIS in 1870 Wilkes Co. & appeared on the 1880 Census in the Wilkes Pento District with Mary & children (I sent you the names earlier).

    * Paris FAVOR married Jane CLAIBORN in 1881 Wilkes Co. These would be Mamie’s Parents.

I am not sure [yet] if Paris 1 & 2 are one in the same — although I believe they are. What I do know is that my Grandfather, Phil CARTER who married Annie FAVER lived close by in the 1880 Census, Pento District.

Paris is on page 11; Phil & family are page 19-20, also District 176 (Pento)-District 135.

Paris is obviously a family name for your FAVORS. Annie is for mine.

Also to note, Paris #1 (wife Mary) had a 10 yr. old Daughter named Annie in 1880.

Looking forward to hearing what your relative in Charlotte has to share.

If he/she can answer any of the questions from the post or shed light on the information here, it would be much appreciated.

    Luckie.
