Mom

1 Year: My Marvelous Mama

There are no words really to sum up the life, legacy and absence of Mama. So today on the 1 year anniversary of her transition, I share the family memories that still have the ability to make this baby girl’s heart smile beyond the tears.

Peace and ease Mama…

A Mother’s Day Gift…

Birthday Memories - Luckie, Jai & MomShe called me her “Rock of Gibraltar”. She loved my lack of tact, chuckled at my acid humor and applauded EVERY hurdle this teenage Mother conquered to create a life she was proud of. Gerrie was my Champion!:)

BRILLIANT in every sense of the word. Mom was relentless, nurturing; an Innovator before we knew what that word even meant. Gerrie commanded attention and though only 5’2 she sparkled in ANY crowd. Boy was she something special!:)

Born 7/6 and 7/7 we were “two peas in a pod”. On my first Mother’s Day without her, I truly know how invaluable Mom was to me, her baby girl.

I believe “Sometimes Grandma” is Mom’s gift to me and the kids. I think she knew in our effort to heal others, we too would find healing and purpose.

Mom was the QUEEN of strategy and taking care of other people. Our Harmony St. Kids have her wrapped all around them!:)

So my gift to you Mama this Mother’s Day is to be…

  • Relentless in my work to see an end to Alzheimer’s Disease. No standing on the sideline. I’m chin-deep in this FIGHT!
  • Fearless in the face of the unknown and unplanned. Life catches us by surprise. I look FORWARD!
  • Tenacious in defining a life on MY TERMS; I call the shots and choose the roads my feet travel.
  • Brazenly, unbelievably HAPPY, HEALTHY and WHOLE as I figure out this new and unfamiliar world. I know you’re still […]

THANKFUL: Little Gerrie BARWICK 1941-2013

“We don’t see the same history….Our history is not dead facts in a book. Our history is alive and still going on. It’s in our songs and stories and the roots of every tree.” ~ Grampa Sky

Little Gerrie BARWICK

Last night my sister Gina sent me a welcomed surprise, little Gerrie BARWICK (Mama – front row; 3rd from left).

Mama’s expression reminded me of the days before Jaiya became “Ms. Glam” and had yet to realize you smile on pics! That’s the EXACT same expression I have on dozens of her pictures!:)

My first Thanksgiving on this planet without my Mom, I’d be lying to say my heart isn’t a little heavy.

But I’m oh so thankful to have such an amazing Mother, who made me the uncompromising, warrior spirit I am.  Thankful for the Mother she taught me to be.  Thankful for the blessings her MULTITUDE of prayers have afforded me.

Thankful this Thanksgiving, my Mama’s at peace and surrounded by love.

Peace and ease Mama… don’t worry about me.

All is well with my soul!:)

Mama’s With Me…

Birthday Memories X3 - Jaiya, Gerrie & LuckieMama’s with me this morning…

From the early morning laugh with my big sister Gina in DC, quoting Mom’s favorite prayer to cover her future generations — blessings to her children’s, children’s, children… to my eldest Jerold, Mom’s namesake, posting her Marvelous Tribute video via Facebook. Memories too beautiful to make me do anything but smile.

Then as I attempted to replay her favorite, Walter Hawkins “Marvelous“, I somehow ended up with “I’m Not The Same” on the Hawkins Love Alive CD!

You talk about memories?! Her FAVORITE Gospel CD — EVER!

It’s a if I can see her swaying, rocking her head and singing…

And now I’m not the same
Because everything has changed because of Christ
Somebody said, somebody said, they told me
They said that I wouldn’t make it
Somebody said, somebody said
They said that I couldn’t take it
Oh, I’m not the same, I’m not the same
Can’t you see?
Everything, oh everything, everything has changed because of Christ

I hear you Mama…

Without question, I KNOW you’re okay! And yes… we, all your children’s children’s children, are getting there.

Marvelous! A Loving Tribute To My Gerrie!:)

It’s been 1 week since my family and I laid Mom to rest. In planning for her Homegoing Celebration, it was important to me Mama be remembered in the spirit she’d lived, and not the shell Alzheimer’s Disease left behind.

Animated. Brilliant. Loyal. So funny… Mama was my everything! She deserved much more than Alzheimer’s time-stamp.

So please enjoy a loving video tribute to our Mother, Geraldine BARWICK, set to her favorite Walter Hawkins song, Marvelous! She was everything our memories reflect and then some!

She was MARVELOUS!:)

Peace and ease Mama…

Luckie

OBITUARY

Geraldine “Gerrie” Barwick, daughter of the late William Charles Barwick and Fannie Louella Jackson Barwick was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 6, 1941. She departed this life peacefully on August 5, 2013.

As a teen Gerrie worked in her family’s neighborhood appliance store. She attended Cincinnati Public Schools and after completing her final years at St. Mary’s High School in Hyde Park, continued on to positions with the Cincinnati and Michigan Bell Telephone Companies. Gerrie also enjoyed a role as WCIN radio station’s midday on-air personality “Cindy Hamilton”, where Butternut Bread was her sponsor.

Gerrie loved the Lord and the Gospel, and spent her lifetime ministering to the spiritual needs of others. After accepting Christ as a young woman, in 1974 Gerrie joined Zion Temple First Pentecostal Church under the leadership of Elder Jasper Phillips where she was baptized and filled with the “Holy Spirit”. Gerrie continued her work in the ministry at Tryed Stone Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Anderson Culbreath until her relocation to Atlanta, Georgia in the late 1980’s. At the time of her “Homegoing”, Gerrie remained a member of Antioch A.M.E. Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where the Reverend Stafford J. Wicker presides as Pastor.

Inheriting her Father’s gift for sales and entrepreneurial spirit, Gerrie established Atlanta’s Harvester Pine Straw Company. As a successful landscape-supply wholesaler, Gerrie traveled throughout the Southeast Region for several years building her reputation and expanding her customer-base.

Fiercely loyal and devoted to family, Gerrie never hesitated […]

FLASHBACK: Better Days. {4.6.10}

I have much on my mind these days, but at the top of my list, summoning the strength to walk with my Mom through her journey of living with Alzheimer’s Disease.

I have to believe my Grandmothers — Allie, Catie, Marrie, Annie F., Annie C., Fannie, Lena, Ella, Laura, Hastey, Ann and Jane are looking over us… holding us up… praying us forward.

I have to believe we have our own Heavenly Cheering Squad that knows, better than I, that it will all be okay.

I can hear them saying, Geraldine will be alright… God has a plan!

So I turn often to Dianne Reeves, Grandma Tribute — Better Days for comfort. It gives me hope and makes me remember how sweet life was when I had the presence of my Grandmothers. There is nothing like a good one.

I share Better Days with you my friends today. Enjoy.

Luckie.

Georgia Here I Come

I’ll be on a plane in a few hours {5 hrs to be exact!}… heading home for the day to interview & visit briefly with my Mom.

Pray that the interview(s) goes well because my ♥ is in Georgia.

Luckie.
